Although it may seem like a no-brainer to add your company logo to a piece of clothing, there are a variety of options and few important things to consider.
- What type of garment are you placing it on?
- What is the size, shape and purpose of your design?
- How many images are you trying to place?
The most common areas for placing branded logos and other images on shirts are on the chest, sleeves and back.
On the Chest
The most common spot to position your logo on a shirt is on the front left-chest. This is where people are accustomed to seeing logos. It is subtle yet effective and works well with garments that have buttons or zippers. This placement is perfect for corporations that do not want a large logo across the front of their shirt. The recommended size for this left-chest placement is approx. 10-12 cm wide.
Have you ever wondered why logos are usually placed on the left side of the chest instead of the right? According to PRINTWEAR Magazine… It is because of the traditional handshake! We reach across our bodies with our right hand to shake, which covers the right chest area. (Fun Fact)
On the Sleeve
Sleeve placement has become quite a popular trend. Businesses with more than one logo, or who are sharing a garment with a sister-company, sponsor, charity or other partner, often place an additional logo on the sleeve. Sleeve logos are usually placed just a few inches above the edge of the sleeve and are typically slightly smaller in size than a left-chest logo.
Sleeve placement is also a great solution when there’s too much to fit on a left-chest spot. Simply split the design into different elements, like logo on the chest and text on the sleeve.
On the Back
If you’re looking for maximum exposure for your logo, message or contact information, across the upper back is your best piece of real-estate. This spot is often used on clothing worn for school activities, product launches, fundraisers and charity events. For screen-printed images, the average width is 35 cm. Screen-printing is recommended for back placements, as large embroidery can be a bit pricey.
Another popular back placement is repeating the left-chest logo on the center of the back, just below the nape of the collar. This is ideal for embroidery.
In addition to these commonly-used locations, there are many other placement options for your logo and graphics on your branded apparel:
